Story

This song came to me in Hong Kong one day in 2011 when I missed my home country, Brazil. Walking the Dragon's Back trail on the way to Shek O, I opened eyes and heart and lived in the moment. The song came and as all my memories flooded my heart in the present tense, i felt whole again. I made peace with time and distance and lovingly accepted my experience as a human being belonging on planet Earth.  This song was transcribed and arranged by Alexis Alrich, in Hong Kong.

Lyrics

 Tão longe da minha terra
Eu vejo que tudo na terra é igual
Aqui a paisagem é a imagem
Da minha terra natal
O que eu vejo é o espelho
Da lembrança de uma criança

Tem montanha banhada de luz
Tem um mar profundo e azul
Tem estrela esquecida no céu
E a lua branca faz sonhar

Tão longe de quem eu amo
Eu encontro a quem amar
Tem tanta gente que a gente sente
Aquele homem é meu parente
Sua história me vem em mente
E a terra toda é lar.

Translation:

Far away from my native land
I see that all on earth is the same
The landscape here looks
The way it looks where I was born.
What I see is the mirror
Of the memories of a child

There are mountains, awash in sunlight,
There’s an ocean, deep and blue,
There’s a star forgotten in the sky
And the white moon has me dreaming

So far away from those I love
I’ve met others I’ve come to love
There are so many people
That man is part of my family
His story comes to my mind
And all of earth is home.

Marcio A Veiga - Renato Castelo de Carvalho

Story

I have known Marcio and Renato for most of my life. They have written together many great songs and I consider their partnership to be one of the most fortuitous in the universe of Brazilian music, a perfect combination of melody and poetry. I felt this song had been written for me to sing and recorded it in Goiania at the SetUp Music studio with awesome local musicians, with whom I played with decades ago. What a wonderful experience to share music time again with Bororo'Felipe and Marcio Veiga, while immersed in the great lyrics of Renato Castelo. To my contentment, Foka and Ricardo de Pina added new blood to the mix. All in all, one of my favorite tracks in the album, a soft, moody and jazzy bossa-nova that thrilled us - like in the old times. Jairo Reis was the sound engineer.

Lyrics

 Tiro de mim este corpo,
este abraco, este beijo
Este cheiro de amor
Tiro de mim esta mancha
da pele e da alma
Este cheiro de flor

Rasgo-me em unhas e dentes
E tiro as sementes
que plantou em mim
Quebro e queimo este caso
Transformando em cinza
O que foi sempre assim

Turvo e misturo este brilho
De vinho sem cor
Me derramo em nada
E continuo na estrada
Voltando sozinha pra dor

Eu sou a mulher que chora
Eu sou quem vai embora
Sou quem nunca perdeu
O sentido do amor
Voce sim, Adeus!

Translation:

I take away from me
The embrace, the kiss
The scent of love
I take away from me the stain
On the skin, on the soul
This scent of flowers

I tear me up with nails and teeth
And take out the seeds
You’ve planted in me
I break and burn this affair
Turning into ashes
Ashes from the start

I cloud up the clarity
Of the colorless wine
I pour myself into nothingness
And continue on my way
Alone I return to pain

I am the woman who grieves
I am the one who leaves
I am who has never lost
The meaning of love.
You have. Goodbye!

Magda Machado - Renato Castelo

Story

Recorded at the SetUp Music Studio in Goiania, Brazil, this song was a sequel to Sonho Azul, written in 1966 by Teca Hezim and I, recorded in the album Voyage to Vera Cruz, with Douglas Lora. This time, the melody is my own, with lyrics by Renato Castelo. An amazing addition of Jairo Reis on electric guitar put the icing on the cake of this inspired song arrangement by Bororó Felipe, master arranger and player.

Lyrics

 Será que este mar
que olha aqui pra mim
Sabe do outro mar
É o Mar Azul a me esperar

Translation:

I wonder if the sea
That now stares at me
Knows of the other
Endless sea
We create wherein to sail
Not getting lost nor anchoring
I wonder if this horizon
Is the same one I was dreaming of
When I invented a Blue Dream
And that white cloud passing by
I wrote about it, and it never returned.
I wonder if in these eyes that look at me
A light still burns
It hasn’t dimmed, and I know why
A Blue Sea awaits me.

Story

This song came to me at the Metro in Hong Kong, where I sometimes lost myself in old and seemingly useless memories of the losses that shaped my life, making me who I am today. It is good to demystify facts and people that caused us pain in our path. Whether these were good or bad for us is irrelevant. Ultimately we understand our own resilience and strength - we can indeed tame wild-things that frightened us, live many lives and awaken to many dreams while honoring the love that shaped us into who we have become. Recorded at SetUp Music Studio in Goiania, with Sergim Veira and Bororó Felipe, by Jairo Reis as sound engineer.

Lyrics

 Tá na hora de amansar
Esta doideira, este bicho, amor
Que não tem descanso,
Vaga mundo, e virou zumbí.

Quantas vidas tem um gato?
Quanto bicho tem no mato?
Quantas malas leva um sonhador?
Este Bicho-Doido tem um nome:
é Amor.

Se o Amor é uma quimera
Quem dera,  pudera esquecer
Se o amor é fantasia
Um dia quem sabe
Acabe esta dor

Translation:

It’s time to tame
This crazy wild-thing, my love
Always restless, a wanderer
Turned zombie.

How many lives does a cat have?
How many wild-things live in the woods?
How many suitcases can a dreamer carry?
This crazy wild-thing has a name:
It is Love.

If Love is a chimera
I wish it could be forgotten
If love is a fantasy
One day, who can say
I’ll be finished with this pain

Magda Machado - Marina Silva

Story

In 2003, my music partner Tereza Hezim (Teca) sent me a poem by Marina Lima, entitled Adorno Natural. The poem resonated with me so much that I sang it. Its melody was so clear to me that did not forget it. It was all simple, effortless, fast. Teca obtained, from Marina Lima, permission for my setting the poem to music and recording the song. A couple of months later, I had it transcribed by Alexis Alrich. Arnaldo Freire gave it its purely Brazilian harmony. After such gestation period, a song was born! I recorded it in Brasilia, Brazil at Estudio Casa do Som, with Dudu Sete-Cordas and Dudu Maia, who made the arrangement.

Every time I hear the song, its unquestionable case for preserving the integrity of Earth's environment comes out clearly and poignantly, and it makes me incredibly happy to be able to share it, in a quest to bring awareness of our need to protect the our forests.

Lyrics

... e a natureza me adorna
Com toda a sua beleza
Me dando sempre a certeza
De que se um dia ela se for
Já não serei mais inteira
Já não terei mais beleza
Já não içarei as asas
Já não terei minha casa
Já não serei quem eu sou

Translation:

… and nature adorns me
With all of its beauty
Making me always certain
That if one day she dies
I won’t be whole anymore
I won’t be beautiful anymore
I won’t raise my wings anymore
I won’t have a home anymore
I won’t be who I am anymore

Story

There are lullabies, and they are grand. But the songs I love the most are the ones that wake me up. I hear them in my sleep and I jump out of bed to write them out, and record them - so that I don't run the risk of ever losing them. Canção de Acordar came in my sleep, and then I took a long bath - sang it, from beginning to end, the number of times I needed to etch it on my brain. It just came, all of it, all it once, melody and lyrics. After this song, I knew to remain faithful to myself, be who I am, and sing to my heart's content. Hear the music. Say the words. Show my heart. Be aware of the sorrow in everyone - then uplift them, if you at all can. Create a space all about beauty - for refuge. Teach that pain can be beautiful if you allow for its teachings. The world does not turn according to your desires, you are not the center of the universe. Love makes you wise when you learn detachment. Uplift all those you can. My voice was tired here. I could not breathe properly. And yet, I sang. I could have recorded it again on a good day, but then, I needed to sing this on the day when I felt that my voice was leaving me, otherwise, it would not have been an accurate song. Transcription was done by Alexis Alrich, initial harmony by Arnaldo Freire. At time of recording, song was given to guitarist Henrique Neto for personal interpretation, which resulted in the beautiful introduction and solo. Dudu Maia came up with a most melodic part for the mandolin- and the song came to life. Recorded in Brasilia, in 2014.

Lyrics

Minha voz chegou ao fim
Como a vida chega ao fim
Como tudo chega ao fim
Como a vida vai passar
Só não passa
a minha vontade de cantar.

E assim nasce uma canção
Como toda, sem razão,
A não ser a de alegrar
A canção que nasce como a flor,
Sem razão que não seja embelezar

Inspira a alegria de ser,
tira a agonia do viver
no coração de quem escutar

Tudo passa,  tudo passará
Só não passa a minha vontade de cantar
A última canção
Que será a primeira a me acordar

Translation:

My voice has come to its end
Like life comes to an end
Like everything comes to an end
Like life will come to pass
The only thing that does not pass
Is my desire to sing

And so a song comes along
For no reason, like every song,
Except for bringing a bit of cheer
The song that comes up like a flower
For no reason other than to bring beauty

It inspires the joy of being,
It ends the agony there’s in living
In the heart of whoever listens

All passes, all shall come to pass
Except for my desire to sing
The last song
Which will be the first to wake me

Story

I had a farm in Brazil for 33 years, and it gradually became a natural reserve because I could not take care of it from afar, and without financial means. I always thought that the vocation of that land, in the heart of the Brazilian Cerrado, was to just go back to being a sea of trees and a haven for wildlife and become a legacy to future generations - and I wanted to preserve it. In the end, I had to let go of it, and the last thing I did while I was there, was to make this song in 2014, under the highest jatobazeiro on the land, and in it I sang the kind of love it inspires in me. The Jatobá tree is a marvel, it can grow 30 meters high, and indigenous people believe that its fruit has the power to heal and to bring wisdom, bringing balance to our desires, feelings and thoughts. When I was a little girl, I loved its strange fruit and always felt strengthened and stimulated in its presence - but I have been a tree-hugger as long I can remember. Arnaldo Freire transcribed the melody, while Dudu Sete-Cordas came up with the harmony used in this recording. Arrangement was done by Dudu Maia, who was also the sound engineer. Recorded in Brasilia, at Estudio Casa do Som - in 2015.

Lyrics

Eu vim só pra dizer que te amo
Desde sempre, para sempre.
Uma semente germinou e cresceu
Forte-forte, alto-alto, como Jatobá
E as raízes adentram a terra
Cavando da terra o gôzo da vida
Que alimenta o nosso amor.

Ouvi o som da terra no rio
Do barranco o canto manso
Da corredeira a nos levar
Cachoeira, palmeira à beira
Das águas onde o amor nasceu e voou
Alto-alto, forte-forte, como Jatobá.

Entre o azul do céu
E o calor da terra
Entre folha e raíz
Corre a seiva do nosso amor
Doce esquisito
Fruta única

Translation:

Hear me say that I love you
Since always, and forever.
A seed sprouted and grew
Very strong, very high, like Jatobá
Its roots dug into the earth
Bearing out the joy of life
That nurtures our loving.

I heard the sound of the earth
From the river bank. The mellow song
Of the current took us
Waterfall, palm-tree-lined pool
From where love came and rose up
Very high, very strong, like Jatobá.

The lushness of our love flows
Between the blue of the sky
And the heat of the earth
Between leaf and root
Strange sweetness
Singular fruit

Story

This song was written for my younger brother, Renato Pires Machado - in memoriam. The most universal of human experiences is the grief felt when a loved one dies. Only time and wisdom can mitigate that kind of pain, and eventually we are blessed with acceptance as we learn to remember without attachment, but rather with gratitude for the love and the time spent together. Transcribed by Alexis Alrich, in Hong Kong, recorded in Brasilia as a Requiem Nordestino. It was recorded at the Estudio Casa do Som. Henrique Lima Santos Neto plays the guitar and was given the freedom of improvisation for the introduction and solo. Junior Ferreira played the acordeon) in the heart-wrenching manner of Brazilian Northeastern sanfoneiros.

Lyrics

Quando tu me vens ao pensamento
É muito mais bonito esse momento
Do que quando pensei
Já nao mais lembrar

Água no deserto
Flor em campo aberto
E na mesa, o pão

O que tu me deixaste é muito mais
Muito mais do que levaste
Em meu coração deixaste
a jóia do Amor.

O que aprendi de ti me fez capaz
De ter coragem de viver
Transformaste o medo e a dor
Na força do amor.

Translation:

The moment I think of you
Is much more beautiful
Than when I think
I can’t remember you.

Water in the desert
Open field of flowers
Bread is on the table

What you left me is much more
Much more than what you’ve taken
In my heart you left
The jewel of Love

What I learnt from you enabled me
To have the courage to live
You changed fear and pain
Into the strength of Love

Story

This song started as a ballad and it evolved into a samba so it could better express the philosophical mood of Brazilians during and after a break-up. Yes, breaking-up hurts. But it also offers an opportunity for reflection, for learning a lesson or two, and for giving advice. And it is a great opportunity to come up with one more samba. Recorded at Estudio Casa do Som in Brasilia, with great energizing vibe from Dudu Sete-Cordas, Bruno Patricio and Valerinho Xavier, plus vocals by Renato Castelo, lyricist and music partner on a couple of songs on this album. Arrangement by Dudu Maia.

Lyrics

Meu amor,
‘cê vem e diz pr’eu te esquecer
E agora diz: como se faz pra esquecer
De respirar e de comer e de dormir?
Meu amor, ‘cê vem e diz
que agora não dá mais
‘Cê me entregou
Como se faz pra entregar
O que é seu – que te dá asas pra voar?

Será você a me esquecer
A me perder
A repetir os erros
Sem aprender da vida
O que deve aprender

Quando o coração não aceita o perdão
Nem escuta a razão
O caminho é de pedra.

Translation:

My love,
You come and tell me to forget you
Now tell me: how does one forget
To breathe, to eat, to sleep?
My love, you come to say
This can’t go on
You’re giving me up.
How can you give up
What’s yours – that gives you wings to fly?

You will be the one to forget me
To lose me
To repeat the mistakes
Failing to learn from life
What you must learn

When the heart can’t accept forgiveness
Can’t listen to reason
The road is made of rocks.

Story

Renato Castelo sent me the lyrics for this song, and the melody just revealed itself to my ears! The song is a little gem. Fun, whimsical, pretty and inspiring. We had a great time recording it at Valerinho Xavier's studio in Brasilia. Transcription of parts and arrangement are by Pedro Vasconcellos who was also music producer and director on this particular recording. A great cavaquinho player, Pedro chose to be flanked by Marcus Vinicius, o Magal, on a 7-string guitar, Thanise Silva with the sweetest of flutes, and Valerinho Xavier, master of every Brazilian percussion instrument, inexaustible source of energy.

Lyrics

Olhe eu queria viajar pelo sereno
Mergulhar por essas cores amarelas do ipê
Correr por dentro desse verde do abacate
E sair por um atalho na garganta
de um tiê

Me pinicar nas folhas soltas de uma urtiga
E andar feito formiga procurando girassol
Olhe eu queria tomar banho na goteira
Da chuva, numa aroeira me secar
num por de sol.

Aproveitar o doce de um gomo de cana
No beijo de uma goiana
sem poder nem respirar
E explodir no canto lindo de um bendito
Sabiá, parar no tempo feito beija-flor no ar

E ser o vento ter nas mãos uma semente
E ver ela se mexendo, ir crescendo virar flor
Olhe eu queria atravessar a gota d água
Esquecer todas as mágoas

Translation:

I wish I could travel with the morning mist
Diving into those yellow colors of the Ipê tree
Running through the green of the avocado
Taking a shortcut through the throat
Of a Tiê bird

Brushing against the sting of nettle leaves
Walking like an ant looking for a sunflower
Washing with rain water from the roof leaks
Climbing up a peppertree to dry off
In the sunset

Enjoying the sweetness of a sugarcane chunk
In the kiss of a Goiana until I have no breath
Then burst in the gorgeous song of a blessed
Mockingbird, hover in mid-air like
A hummingbird

And be the wind, have a seed in my hands
Seeing it move, grow and turn into a flower
Look, I wish I could cross a water-drop
Forget all sorrows
Because you are my love
I would like for everything to be like this:
Me sleeping on your lap
You sleeping inside me.

Just like a piece of sugar
On the roof-of-the-mouth
Melting like meringue,
Seeing the aroma of rosemary
My hands on your body, warm from kisses
Crafty sinners, hearing no and saying yes.

Story

Poem written in 1998, at the sound of El Dia en Que Me Quieras, of Carlos Gardel, with the Berlin Symphonic, conducted by Daniel Beremboin. Poem set to music in 2007, in Miami. I have always loved the tango, and the music of Astor Piazzolla haunted me since I heard him decades ago. I met Alexis Alrich after her performance for the Hong Kong Chamber Music Society at the Hong Kong Club. She played her beautiful compositions and two tangos of Piazzolla. I cried pretty much throughout the concert - it was that beautiful. A few months after that, intimidated and shy, I asked Christine Nigam to approach her for me, as I was determined to have her play Os Tanguistas with me. William Lane of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble joined us with the rich telluric tones of his virtuoso viola playing, as did Sam Ferrer, the outstanding double-bassist of the Hong Kong Phillharmonic. Acordeon by Caetano Bartholo was added in Brasilia, as well as percussion by Macaxeira Acioli. Parts and arrangement by Alexis Alrich in Hong Kong, and by Dudu Maia in Brasilia. Recorded in 2014.

Lyrics

Os tanguistas são donos da tristeza.
Quero entrar onde habitam
Quero lembrar por que a paixão
Dilera os amantes

A dor de amar
Pode abrir uma ferida
Que nada nem ninguem
Vai conseguir sarar

Quando esta musica
Doida, doída, me lembrar
Do amor que eu tinha
Me virá a dor

Toda a dor do mundo
Que é só minha
Tango players are the owners of sadness.
I want to go into their homes
I want to remember why it is that passion
Lacerates lovers

Translation:

The pain of loving
May open a wound
That nothing and no one
Can ever heal

When this crazy achy
Music reminds me
Of the love I used to have
The pain will come

All the pain of this world
Which I bear alone

Story

On March 11, 2011 a tsunami hit Japan following a devastating magnitude 9.0 earthquake. From Hong Kong, I watched the terrible moments when the mighty ocean rolled onto land taking all things on its path. The loss of life, the pain and the despair of the survivors, were all unimaginable. I sat down and I wrote the lyrics in English to my song Lembrança and renamed it Remembrance (Until the End of Time), which I now dedicate to the survivors of the terrible tragedy. Sound Engineer - King Kong Recorded at Hong Kong Baptist University Music Studio in 2014

Lyrics

I’ll remember you with light in your eyes
I’ hold you in my heart until the end of time
And the memory of you
Will keep me alive

Oasis in the desert
Fields of flowers blossom
I lie down and rest

Translation:

The gift I had from you is more, much more
Than the mighty ocean knows to take
In my heart the chain of love
Will never ever break.

I know I’ve got the strength to carry on
I walk as if you’re by my side
The light of you will carry me
Until the end of time.
